Up to now there has been no accurate data about the number of AHPs working in joint contracts between the academic and service provider sectors. National political and policy drivers have ear-marked the need for growth of practitioner-academic (clinical-academic) roles – with this being essential to ensure future quality standards of evidence-based care, as well as a vital contribution to workforce recruitment and retention.

This survey will generate hugely important insights into the numbers and nature of these joint appointments in all AHP disciplines; including how they are funded, role sustainability, job security and the key operational/organisational supports that have enabled these appointments. The survey will establish a baseline dataset of these roles, mapped against CAHPR’s UK-wide regional Hub Consortia.

The results of the survey will additionally highlight ‘parity and equity’ of research roles and opportunities across AHP specialisms around the UK. This will generate more understanding of:

  • How AHP practitioner-academic and AHP dedicated research time are facilitated
  • How AHP practitioner-academic and AHP dedicated research time are funded.
  • The security of such roles/funding
  • Key operational/organisational supports.

The survey is being conducted on behalf of CAHPR and is hosted by the host Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT). The project has been reviewed and approval given through RCOT project governance process, reference number PE123/24.

The findings will be reported publicly through CAHPR and will complement other concurrent CAHPR Accelerator Project (CAP24) workstreams to provide vital leverage for securing increased opportunities for AHPs.

All responses are anonymous and the survey is open to all UK registered AHPs who have dedicated research time as part, or all, of their current role. Our pilot feedback confirmed that on average this survey takes only 10 mins to complete.
